As Senior Executive Partner and Head of Studio, Luke leads a global team across offices in the UK, Saudi Arabia, China and Singapore, as well as overseeing the practice’s Applied R+D group. Luke studied architecture at the University of Sydney and began his career in New York, working on high-profile commissions in Asia, such as the Rodin Museum in Seoul. He joined Foster + Partners in 1998 and from the outset, has been entrusted with some of the studio’s most complex design and delivery challenges. In 2003, he moved to China to set up the office for the construction of Beijing Capital International Airport which, at its peak, had 50,000 workers. Underpinned by his confident leadership approach, this experience of steering complex projects and international teams aids his role on the Design Board, where he leads the design on projects across the world. A consistent theme is the integration of buildings and urban systems, be it Riyadh’s new King Salman International Airport, Alibaba Shanghai Campus, a nation-wide high-speed rail network in Saudi Arabia, or the Lusail World Cup Stadium in Qatar, which expresses a new passion for sport and culture through architecture. His interest in research and innovation, coupled with the strategic perspective of delivering large-scale projects, give him a unique understanding of design. Throughout his career, Luke has driven technological innovation in pursuit of environmental goals, bringing this insight to climate-responsive designs, and always encouraging his team to find creative solutions that push the boundaries of building typologies in new ways.
