James studied Architecture and City/Regional Planning at Cornell University and the University of Texas at Austin, where he discovered a passion for environmental design. Since he joined Foster + Partners in 2014, James has been focused on the design and execution of natural and artificial lighting strategies for high-profile projects around the world. He is always striving to develop simple, powerful artistry from a strong basis of scientific capability - drawing upon his expertise in computer graphics, material science, and the application of machine learning methods to lighting design and control. James also leads the development of sophisticated workflows, systems, and tools to delve deeply into the dynamics that govern the relationship between natural phenomena and human perception, well-being, and delight.
