Foster 500/505 series, Walter Knoll

Foster + Partners worked with Walter Knoll to create a series of seating ranges. The first of these, the Foster 500 line, is based on a dimensional module that can be configured to create a variety of spatial arrangements. The subsequent 501, 503, 505 and 510 series further develop this flexible concept.

Norman Foster and Walter Knoll first started working together when it came to furnishing the Reichstag in Berlin. Since then, the Foster 500 line, specially created for Walter Knoll, has become a symbol of the synthesis of architecture and furnishing. The modular range comprises leather chairs, sofas, benches and glass occasional tables. The sofa is arranged on a floating base, and the back and armrests fit together in a perfect relationship characterised by precision and conciseness. The seating is available in two styles: the 500 has a broader seat depth and width, as well as wider armrests, and comes with loose seat and back cushions. The 501 is a smaller version with a loose seat cushion and a fixed back. The later Foster 503 differs from its predecessors in scale and is proportionally larger all over. Inspired by the Italian concept of a living platform, everything is softer – from the upholstery to the relaxed lines of the chrome steel frame – fitting for a residential interior.
