Looking ahead to the new Marseille Airport

Following an international competition, Foster + Partners was appointed to design and oversee the construction of the new Marseille Airport in 2017. Building work started in 2021 and the project is due to complete later this year, in time for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The city of Marseille will host a number of sporting events during the games, including the sailing and football.

Francois Curato, Partner, Foster + Partners, said: “We are delighted to see momentum building on site and look forward to the opening later this year. The brief was to add the missing piece of the airport, bringing together all the elements from previous eras of growth. For the first time in its history, there will be a single passenger flow through the space.”

The new extension will allow the airport to serve up to 12 million passengers per year, excluding the MP2 terminal. It restores the clarity of layout and expression in Fernand Pouillon’s 1960s original, while adding the ‘missing piece’ to the 1992 extension by Richard Rogers to tie the entire ensemble of buildings together.

The project also creates a new ‘Coeur’ – literally, heart in French – that rationalises arrival and departure sequences within a single building, creating an intuitive progression through the terminal for passengers.
